medical-bills

Before you make an appointment to see a doctor, make sure your doctor is in-network as opposed if he or she takes your insurance. Out-of-network doctors may accept what your insurance pays but they can bill you for the difference if f they are not in-network. This seems like semantics but is not. There is a big difference.
If this is your yearly physical visit always ask if routine tests are really necessary. Think to question how the results would change the treatment. Every test has benefits and risks associated with it, so you would want to make sure that X Rays, CT scans or MRI are really needed. There is always larger co-pay for more expensive tests, incurring extra expenses. Different facilities also charge different amounts for the same tests so shop around.
Saving on lab work is possible as well, so make sure the lab is in your network. It can make a huge difference running from $150-$ 2,000.
When your doctor recommends a medication, always ask if there is a cheaper alternative or a generic one. Also ask for free samples if they have available. Once you have the prescription, make sure to call around. It is amazing how different drugstores charge for the same medication.
Lastly, if you need to see a specialist, try to stay in network. All the visits, tests, medications cost can really add up.
But medical expenses should not be an excuse to avoid preventive care. Early diagnosis can save lives.
